Some time ago, I decided that I would ride my bicycle across the United States. Whether it was legitimately decided in my heart when I, a day-dreaming adolescent, first heard of cyclists riding from coast to coast, or the day that I put a down payment on a touring bike, I can't really say.
Regardless, my day of departure has arrived - the morning of June 30, my gracious parents have agreed to drive me to Yorktown, Va. where I will set out on July 1, 2007 for San Francisco, Ca.
My trek will take me from Virginia's Tidewater region through the Appalachian Mountains to the Bluegrass, the farmlands of western Kentucky, southern Illinois and Missouri and the Ozarks to the windswept plains of Kansas and eastern Colorado. From Pueblo, I will cross the Rockies into Utah's Canyonlands country, traverse the barren wilderness of Nevada into California and cruise right into the San Francisco Bay. Three thousand seven hundred eighty nine miles in all.
Pray for me.
