The Adventure Begins

Some time ago, I decided that I would ride my bicycle across the United States. Whether it was legitimately decided in my heart when I, a day-dreaming adolescent, first heard of cyclists riding from coast to coast, or the day that I put a down payment on a touring bike, I can't really say.

Regardless, my day of departure has arrived - the morning of June 30, my gracious parents have agreed to drive me to Yorktown, Va. where I will set out on July 1, 2007 for San Francisco, Ca.

My trek will take me from Virginia's Tidewater region through the Appalachian Mountains to the Bluegrass, the farmlands of western Kentucky, southern Illinois and Missouri and the Ozarks to the windswept plains of Kansas and eastern Colorado. From Pueblo, I will cross the Rockies into Utah's Canyonlands country, traverse the barren wilderness of Nevada into California and cruise right into the San Francisco Bay. Three thousand seven hundred eighty nine miles in all.

Pray for me.

This is exciting John! I am glad you are doing this. Nice new wheels, by the way. I like the Surly :)

I will definitely keep you in prayer, especially against scrapes and bruises, as you seem to like associating with those types :)

Have a great ride!

Wow, John!
I am proud and excited for you. Please be careful! If you pass through middle Georgia, call us and we will be happy to host you. (The jacuzzi tub could really come in handy for those sore leg muscles!)

Zambo,
I'm so impressed and you've barely started! Good luck and I'm expecting my story for the Ambassador. After all, I believe you still owe me a few stories from fall semester. Be careful!

Hi John, your Dad just told me about your adventure - INCREDIBLY IMPRESSIVE! We will be checking your blog often, and praying for you the same. When I start to feel tired on my, much shorter, charity ride later in July, I will think about YOUR ride....and be glad that it is YOUR backside in the saddle for 3789 miles and not mine! LOL - Take care - enjoy it all and keep a smile on your face!

Zambo - That was me that waived today when my team zoomed by on that long grade out of town. Sorry I couldn't stop to chat. We were trying to get in a quick 150 miles before sundown.
